HOPE — The town of Hope is planning to repave about twice the number of streets compared to what was completed last year.
In October, the town of Hope received $189,400 through the Community Crossings matching grant program that will allow the northeast Bartholomew County community to mill and resurface nine sections of streets.
Three sections are listed as top priorities for Hope, according to engineering consultant Tony Akles of Stand and Associates:
All of Brookside Drive
Cross Street, from Harrison Street to Bradley Street
Washington Street, from Walnut Street to Aiken Street
Six other sections are also on the list to receive a fresh layer of asphalt:
Robbins Street, from Jackson Street to South Street
High Street, from West Street to Main Street.
High Street, from Harrison Street to a nearby alleyway.
Locust Street, from Maple Street to Walnut Street.
Maple Street, from Mill Street to Locust Street.
Walnut Street, from Cross Street to Jackson Street.
One of the project’s most costly aspects will be replacing curb ramps located along Washington Street east of the Community Center of Hope, Akles said.
Town council president Jerry Bragg has repeatedly asked that each curb ramp have a protective cover made of cast iron, rather than plastic.
Water tends to eventually make its way under plastic, which eventually causes the covers to pop and break, Bragg said.
While Akles agrees, he reminded the council that cast iron covers are more expensive (about $200 a piece), and will eventually rust over time.
“But if the council is fine with cast iron, we’re also fine with it,” Akles said.
Bids are first be advertised on Tuesday, and are scheduled for opening on Feb. 18, the engineering consultant said.
Once the contract is awarded, work will likely begin in late spring, and be competed within a couple of months, Akles said.
With a population of nearly 2,200 residents, Hope is required to only match 25% of the grant amount, town financial consultant Trena Carter said.
In contrast, the city of Columbus and Bartholomew County are required to match 50% of the state’s contribution, due to their larger population size.
