GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- City officials are agreeing to the vacation of a street in Northeast Grand Rapids for the purpose of a proposed expansion of Grand Valley State University’s campus.
On Tuesday, Feb. 25, the city commission consented to the vacation of Prospect Avenue from Hastings Street to Trowbridge Street. The request was made by GVSU, which owns all of the adjacent property.
Grand Valley State will cover the costs associated with the street vacation, which is estimated to be about $49,500.
As of Feb. 25, the street provides access to residences on the ease side of the street and provides access to Hastings Street and Trowbridge Street. The houses in the area belong to the university.
Vacationing the street means removing it as a public right-of-way. It will turn the road into a limited access pedestrian street and enable the development laid out in the GVSU Belknap Master Plan.
After the vacation is complete, Grand Valley would need to rework the north and south entrances of the street to a driveway configuration.
The GVSU Belknap Master Plan was developed through the partnership of GVSU, the city of Grand Rapids, and the Neighbors of Belknap Lookout association.
Grand Valley’s Raleigh Finkelstein Hall opened at 500 Lafayette Ave. in 2018. The five-story facility, which includes classroom, laboratory and office space to support the College of Health Professions and Kirkhof College of Nursing, sits at the southeastern portion of the road to be vacated.
In July 2018, the university began moving forward with a project to develop affordable housing in the area of the Belknap Lookout neighborhood near its health campus. University leadership wanted to provide housing to the neighborhood after it tore down homes to pave the way for the expansion of the health campus.
On Tuesday, the commission passed the vacation request during its community development committee meeting. It’s expected to be passed through a sweeping consent agenda vote Tuesday evening.
