Alderman Diz Demes put the La Salle’s “parking issue” to the test. He said there isn’t one.
He made the comments Monday night at the city council meeting when officials were tasked with voting on permits in regard to a potential marijuana dispensary.
“Parking was brought up at the planning commission,” Demes said, and then explained how he discerned there is not a problem: “I’m telling you, since the planning commission, (and) since I’m retired and I don’t have anything to do all day,” after hearing those comments, he decided to station himself on First Street, Canal Street and Hennepin Street.
“There’s not a parking problem downtown there, with the exception of maybe Saturday,” Demes said. “There is plenty of parking.”
Earlier this month, parking on First Street was brought up as a potential problem when it came to a proposed dispensary at 853 First St.
The issues about parking were talked about at the joint hearing for the Zoning Board and Planning Commission in regard to requests to operate the dispensary at that location, too.
Alderman Joe Jeppson said he’d like see a solid plan when it comes to parking for the dispensary.
The man requesting the permits, Andrew Martinez, asked if Jeppson has ever told another business to come up with a parking plan.
Jeppson said he’d like to see a plan, for a specific situation like if 45 cars came to the dispensary.
Martinez mentioned that people often go in and out fast at dispensaries, depending on the line size.
Martinez said he wants to contact the Flamingo Banquet Center in La Salle to work together to get a parking lot that could help those come to the dispensary.
