JOLIET, IL — An overnight shooting on the city's southeast side left two men dead, the Joliet Police Department has confirmed. The Will County Coroner's Office identified them as Tracy Williams, 45, and Bernard Marble, 53, both of Joliet. Williams was pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m. while Marble was pronounced dead at 1:20 a.m. at the St. Joe's emergency room.
Joliet police say the shooting occurred around 12:50 a.m. near Chicago Street and 5th Avenue. Officers found the men inside a sports utility vehicle. The 45-year-old man was already dead. The second was rushed by ambulance to the Amita Health Saint Joseph Medical Center "where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries," police said.
Marble, who lived in the 100 block of Allen Street, was recently in the Will County Jail for about 10 days in December after being arrested by Joliet police on charges of possession of controlled substances and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was freed on Dec. 20 after posting 10 percent of his $15,000 bail.
Joliet police detectives closed down South Chicago Street between 1:15 a.m. and 4:20 a.m. as part of the investigation into the violent crime. The area of focus was from around McDonough Street to I-80, the police announced on social media.
The double homicide remains under investigation and no arrests have been made.
After the crime, Joliet community activist Bob Hernandez went to the scene and made several Facebook live videos. Hernandez said he spoke with a gas station attendant who told him that the men may have been at the gas station prior to being shot.
Hernandez also said that Joliet police officers told the overnight gas station clerk that the crime was a homicide.
