UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan — A large water main break on Manhattan's Upper West Side flooded streets and nearby subway stations, snarling subway service and traffic in the area Sunday morning.
Just before 8 a.m. New York City Transit crews were alerted to a water condition on the tracks after a city-owned water main broke at 103rd Street and Central Park West, along the A, C, and D train lines, according to the MTA.
Service along those lines was immediately suspended betwen 59th Street-Columbus Circle and 125th Street, as the level of water rose above the third rail, making it too dangerous to operate trains on those tracks, the MTA said.
The water main was shut off at about 9 a.m. by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), officials said.
Police and New York City Emergency Management advised people to avoid the area as crews worked to drain the water from the area.

While service started to resume along the A, C and D lines Sunday afternoon, the MTA still advised customers to use the 1, 2 and 3 lines, or other subway service, when possible.
The MTA's NYCT Subway Twitter account tweeted a thread with alternate service suggestions to help people get around amid the changes.
Police asked people to avoid the area, saying that both northbound and southbound lanes of Central Park West are closed to traffic between West 97th Street and West 102nd Street while crews work on the break.
