Gas Leak Prompts Evacuations, Street Closures in Downtown San Jose: FD - NBC Bay Area

A gas leak prompted evacuations in downtown San Jose late Friday morning, according to the San Jose Fire Department.

The leak was reported at 10:12 a.m. at the corner of Fifth and San Fernando streets after a work crew hit a half-inch gas line, fire officials said.

PG&E was on scene and crews were able to repair the break at around 2:30 p.m., fire officials said.

Three buildings in the immediate area were evacuated and a shelter in place was issued for a large retirement community facility nearby.

San Fernando Street is still closed but is expected to reopen soon, and Fifth Street is to remain closed until PG&E personnel leave the area.

No injuries were reported.
