Front Street in downtown San Diego will be closed for construction between Broadway and West F Street for 21 months starting Saturday.
The project is aimed at improving the underpass at the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Office Building at 880 Front St., according to the U.S. General Services Administration.
The federal agency said in a news statement that structural work will increase safety for those working at the building, as well as for people walking and driving in the area.
Upgrades will include reinforcing the building’s framing at the underpass, using steel beams, support columns and concrete paneling.

Walls will be constructed to separate pedestrians from traffic lanes, and more efficient lighting will be installed in the pedestrian walkways.
“One of our strategic goals is better management of federal real estate and this … construction project allows for that while also being a catalyst for downtown revitalization,” said Tom Scott, regional administrator for the General Services Administration. “By enhancing the Schwartz Federal Office Building’s structural integrity, we’re also providing a safer public space in partnership with the community.”
Traffic will be detoured off Front Street starting at 5 a.m. Jan. 25 through June 2021. Construction is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., except on weekends and holidays, but the area will be closed to traffic 24 hours a day.
Signs will be posted on Interstate 5 and downtown alerting drivers to the closure. Those using the underground parking garage at 101 W. Broadway will be able to use the easternmost lane of Front Street between Broadway and E Street.
