Art-themed basketball courts coming to former Dickson Street Theater location - Fayetteville Flyer

Try to think of the very last headline you thought you’d see on the Flyer today. Got it? Ok here goes.

Was it “Art-themed basketball courts coming to former Dickson Street Theater location?” If it was, well, great job. You’d be right (liar).

Crews have been working the last few weeks to demolish the building, formerly located at 227 W. Dickson next to Dickson Street Theater, to make way for a new project created in partnership with the Tyson Family Foundation and Experience Fayetteville called ‘Art Court.’

The project, according to Tyson Family Foundation representative Jordan Garner, who is serving as the project lead for Art Court, is to create an art-themed basketball court and public, community space on the site. The site would be managed by Experience Fayetteville, funded by a $236,000 Tyson Family Foundation grant.

“We engaged with the Experience Fayetteville team last summer to begin discussions about the opportunity and the Experience Fayetteville team has been an incredible partner,” Garner said. “Their role in the three-year project will be funded entirely through philanthropic dollars and will focus on the day-to-day operations and communications. Experience Fayetteville and Fayetteville’s A&P Commission are proven leaders in tourism, proactive in promoting the diverse residents, businesses, and happenings that make Fayetteville a top place to live and visit.”

Experience Fayetteville CEO Molly Rawn said she expects the visitors bureau’s role in the project to relate to opening and closing the space each day, managing the social media, and maintaining the space with things like paint, supplies, net nets, etc.

Rawn said she doesn’t anticipate programming the space for events, however.

“We don’t anticipate using for events and things like that,” she said. “We want it to be open and available. I think that’s what is one of the things that is most interesting about the project is, we don’t know exactly how people will use it, whether it’s just playing pick up games, or as a place to just hang out, or as a place to take photos. We are excited to open it up and see how people use the space.”

The basketball courts won’t be full-sized once complete, but they will be fully functional for pick up basketball, or a friendly game of ‘H-O-R-S-E.’

Artists from local creative agency BLKBOX are working on the design for the space, Garner said.

“It will be a free, public community space with art and play,” Garner said. “There will be elements of basketball as well. It will be open air and we plan to use portions of the existing building, a nod back to the colorful past and memories of the various businesses once located at 227 W Dickson.”

The project came about in part, Garner said, through a placemaking conference Tyson Family Foundation officials attended in 2019 that emphasized the importance of outdoor public spaces in a community.

Garner said the group is hoping to use the project as a testing ground for future, similar projects in the region.

“TFF and the property owner Art Court, LLC hope that by turning the unused property into a pocket-park-like project it will allow us to better understand how our community interacts with a public space in our Downtown District,” she said. “We hope to learn how the space is used and how it wants to be used and share these learnings with the City of Fayetteville for the opening of The Ramble, our Downtown Arts and Culture Corridor.”

Property records indicate building last sold in 2018 to HMT of Fayetteville L.L.C., the same company that owns the Three Sisters Building across the street. HMT purchased from CB Real Estate Holdings L.L.C., a group had hoped to build a movie theatre on the property before abandoning the project in 2018. The property was deeded to Art Court in April of this year.

Construction on the project is underway, with contractor CDI Construction working on the build and landscape design by Ecological Design Group.

If all goes well, Garner said more announcements about the project are due out later this summer, and she hopes to have the project up and running by sometime this fall.

Sejarah taco

Taco pertama kali dikenal pada abad ke-18. Istilah taco digunakan oleh penambang perak dari Meksiko untuk menyebut bubuk mesiu yang dibungkus kertas guna meledakkan batu yang mengandung perak.

Berdasarkan dokumentasi yang ada, makanan yang dikenal sebagai taco untuk pertama kalinya disebut dengan nama "tacos de minero" (taco penambang).

Sebenarnya taco telah dikenal sangat lama. Ada bukti antropologis yang mencatat bahwa pada zaman dahulu penduduk asli Amerika memakan taco yang diisi dengan ikan kecil.

Middle Street Market sees 'good turnout' at first two events - Shelby County Reporter - Shelby County Reporter

MONTEVALLO – After seeing how the COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected countless businesses, the owners of two Montevallo businesses decided to create a new outlet for local vendors.

This spring, The Art Studio owner Alison Baggett and her landlord, Montevallo Makers owner Casie Pate, launched Middle Street Market, a monthly outdoor event featuring an array of handmade goods and food trucks.

“With COVID and everything being shut down, we were just looking for a way to get people back in Montevallo to shop and support local businesses,” Baggett said. “We both do handmade things in our shops, and we wanted it to be something with unique, handmade items.”

The first Middle Street Market took place in May at Owl’s Cove Park in downtown Montevallo.

“We’ve had 10 vendors total, and we’re trying to grow that slowly as we go,” Baggett said. “Our vendors have been happy with their sales. With it being brand new, you never know what to expect, but we’ve had a good turnout.”

Items available at the markets include handmade jewelry, candles, soaps, lighting, plants and original artwork.

Baggett said at least one food truck has come to each market, too.

Middle Street Market is held on the second Saturday of each month. This year, the market’s season will end in August, but Baggett said she and Pate would like for it to become a year-round event.

New vendors are welcome to apply for upcoming markets, even if they are not based in Montevallo.

“We’re working on new vendors each month,” Baggett said. “We’re very involved in Main Street Montevallo, and we’re also including Calera Main Street and Columbiana Main Street businesses.”

Market visitors may park anywhere in the downtown area.

The next two markets will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 10 and Aug. 14 at Owl’s Cove Park, located at 737 Main Street.

Alexandria, VA – DASH and the City of Alexandria announced that the free King Street Trolley will resume on Monday, July 5. Free daily service along King Street in Old Town Alexandria will return with the following service adjustments.

The King Street Trolley is returning to King Street!

• Trolley service will run from the King Street Metro station to Alexandria City Hall’s Market Square.
• The trolley will run every 15 minutes from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days per week, including holidays. This simplified schedule will make the trolley more accessible to residents, workers and visitors.
• A new trolley stop will be established at the southeast corner of Market Square on North Fairfax Street to serve passengers accessing the Potomac River waterfront. Due to the closure of the 100 block of King Street, the stops at Union Street and Lee Street will no longer be served.

Customer and employee safety remain a top priority as trolley service resumes after nearly 15 months of suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still requires all passengers and operators wear masks on public transportation, face masks are required to board and ride the free King Street Trolley. To ensure the safety of passengers and operators, DASH trolleys are equipped with plexiglass driver barriers and face masks are provided as needed.

The free King Street Trolley is a convenient and fun way to discover Old Town Alexandria. With stops every 2-3 blocks for hopping on and off, passengers can explore shops, restaurants and attractions found along Alexandria’s historic main street. Carrying nearly 9 million passengers since 2008, the King Street Trolley’s hybrid vehicle fleet makes the service an environmentally-friendly alternative while exploring.

Why Wall Street Wants To Stop Remote Work And Return To Offices - NPR

You might assume that Wall Street boss James Gorman and falafel-maker David Shadaha don't have much in common. But after months of remote work, they share a goal: to get bankers back into their New York buildings.

With a few exceptions, major Wall Street banks are already moving to resume office work as long as workers are vaccinated. Gorman, who is Morgan Stanley's chairman and CEO, expects most of his staff to be back by Labor Day.

"I'll be very disappointed if people haven't found their way into the office," Gorman said in a video posted by Morgan Stanley. "And then we'll have a different conversation."

That may not be great for every Morgan Stanley employee, but it's good news for Shadaha and others whose livelihoods depend on the legions of white-collar workers across Manhattan.

Shadaha operates his King of Falafel & Shawarma cart in Midtown, across the street from the investment firms BlackRock and Evercore.

When the pandemic emptied out New York City streets, Shadaha had to put away his cart. He spent five months as a GrubHub deliveryman.

"It's been a disaster," Shadaha says of the pandemic's impact.

Today, there are signs of recovery in Manhattan. But for every coffee shop that is open for business, another one has closed its doors for good. The same is true of delis and bakeries.

Pedestrian traffic is coming back, but it's down 70% from what it was before the pandemic, with large parts of international tourism still shut down.

That makes people like Shadaha even more dependent on office workers. He estimates he is making only about half of what he made in February 2020.

"I'm just working only for the offices here," he says, gesturing to the skyscrapers that line Park Avenue. "So, if it's nobody here, it's like business is dead."

Goldman Sachs CEO calls remote work an "aberration"

Soon, Shadaha should start seeing more customers.

Financial firms may have raked in record profits during an unprecedented year of remote work, but for a while now Wall Street executives have been dropping strong hints that they want workers to return.

In February, for example, Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon referred to remote work as "an aberration that we are going to correct as quickly as possible."

Bankers have already been back at Goldman Sachs since mid-June.

Blackstone executives have asked fully vaccinated workers to return. Citigroup's head of human resources says the plan is for 30% of its staff to be in the office this summer.

That Wall Street is coming back so early is no surprise to those who work in the industry. A banker's job is high stress and high stakes with long days spent in busy offices or on crowded trading floors. The upside comes in the form of perks and handsome pay, like being able to expense pricey dinners or black cars home.

It was the type of environment that James Davies, the global head of Deutsche Bank's institutional clients group, had grown accustomed to, which made it such a shock when he came back to a partially deserted office.

"You know, having worked in the industry for 25 years, it was somewhat strange to walk onto the trading floor on a Wednesday morning and see, I'd guess, six to 10 people here, versus the hundreds we would normally have," he recalls.

Today, he estimates it is at 40% occupancy, but climbing.

For Davies, it is a decision borne out of convenience and cultural necessity.

"There is a real benefit to people being in the same place," says Davies, noting as well the importance of what he calls "the soft cues of business."

Not every bank will expect its workers back five days a week. UBS this week said it would adopt a hybrid work model. And French bank BNP Paribas, which has 14,000 employees in North America, also plans to provide flexibility.

"We are expecting everyone will come into the office every week, but obviously not full time," says Claudine Gallagher, the chief human resources officer for BNP Paribas' corporate institutional banking group in the Americas.

Why Wall Street matters to New York

Boosting the number of traders and bankers working at New York offices matters more than just preserving Wall Street's culture.

A 2021 report from the Office of the New York State Comptroller estimates the securities industry employed 179,900 people, or 19% of New York City's workforce.

That means scores of ancillary businesses depend on Wall Street, such as Schumer's Wine and Liquors near the investment bank Jefferies and around the corner from Shadaha's cart.

Larry Duke, who has owned the shop since 1978, says he never considered closing, even when his business dropped by nearly 80%. He laid off staff, renegotiated his lease with his landlord and took out two loans through the Paycheck Protection Program to stay afloat.

Still, business hasn't bounced back completely.

"It's a roller coaster, and there is no defining reason why you have a good day, or why you have a bad day," he says, with his German shepherd, Klaus, nearby.

But things are getting better as the summer progresses.

Not too far away, Shadaha has a line of customers waiting for their lunch orders. Workers are filtering back, and they want their usual wrap or platter just like the old days.

"It feels like life is coming back," Shadaha says.
