Street closures ending Nov. 1 in downtown Ann Arbor, but may come back in the spring - MLive.com

ANN ARBOR, MI -- Street closures in downtown Ann Arbor will officially end on Nov. 1, with plans to reopen again in the spring, according to organizers of the closures.

Sandra Andrade, the executive director of the Main Street Association, said the association has tentative plans to bring the street closures back next year, if the community and association still want them.

“These have developed into something it seems like the community wants,” Andrade said, adding that the reaction from businesses has been strongly positive.

Parts of downtown Ann Arbor originally closed in April to promote social distancing and prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Closures were in effect from 4 p.m. on Thursday through 6 a.m. on Mondays, with Maynard and West Washington Streets closed around-the-clock during the week.

When originally closed in March, the blocked-off streets included:

  • Main Street from William to Washington Street
  • West Liberty Street from Ashley Street to Main Street
  • East Liberty Street from Main Street to Fourth Avenue and from Maynard to State Street
  • West Washington Street from Ashley Street to Main Street
  • State Street from Washington Street to William Street
  • Maynard Street on the east side, or northbound portion only from Liberty to William Street

A later decision from the State Street Merchants Association to remove itself from the closures reopened State Street, Maynard Street and part of East Liberty Street.

Andrade said she plans to start surveying local residents and businesses in February, with street closures tentatively earmarked for April or May 2022. The closures will likely be on the same streets, she added.

“We definitely have figured out what footprint works for us,” Andrade said.

The State Street Association, which reopened its streets before the resolution was extended in August, said it would likely not participate in the coming year’s closures.

“At this time, State Street does not have any plans to have street closures next year,” said Frances Todoro-Hargreaves, the executive director of the State Street Merchants Association, in an email to MLive. “…We may take a look at the idea as the spring gets closer.”

Andrade said the association would like to see additional support from the city of Ann Arbor, which has worked with the association to fund the barricades used to block off streets, as well as the labor to place them.

Councilwoman Linh Song said in a city council meeting on Oct. 18 that the closures have been a success.

“I’m hoping for another successful closure next spring and look forward to working on that,” she said.

Andrade said the decision last year was “easy” because of the support from residents and businesses.

“[The] strong, strong, strong majority we have is positive,” she said.
