On Tuesday, October 5, the community contributed to the success of affordable and safe housing by participating in a Wall Building event at Market Street in The Woodlands with Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County. The organization hosted the event in honor of World Habitat Day, a day that the United Nations General Assembly took an important step in promoting the idea that everyone deserves a decent place to live.
Habitat Montgomery County was given the unique opportunity to construct the framework for a new home at Market Street underwritten by Entergy. After the walls were built, they were moved to Habitat Montgomery County’s Cedar Creek subdivision in Conroe where the walls will become the frame for a new home for a qualified family.
Habitat’s skilled construction volunteers were on site to assist with hammering nails and to provide guidance throughout the event. Volunteers had the opportunity to sign the walls that will be used to construct a home for a new homeowner, buy a stud to go into a Habitat home, and participate in kid-friendly activities.

Habitat Montgomery County has a mission to build safe, decent, affordable homes for families in our community. After working all day, going to school, or doing what we enjoy, it is nice to have a safe place to come home to. Not everyone has that benefit and as a community we are learning more and more about the importance of home. Participation in this event contributed to making the dream of homeownership a reality for a family in need.
Habitat homes cost approximately $60,000 to sponsor that includes $10,000 for a foundation, doorknobs throughout the house cost $50, and every donation makes a difference to reach the goal of completion. Volunteers work alongside professional contractors to build the home with step-by-step supervision as a group with coworkers or part of an organization, or alternatively – on their own as an individual. Construction volunteers work alongside the family that will soon call the house “home”. Learn more about volunteering at www.habitatmctx.org/get-involved/volunteer-as-a-group.
Since 1989, Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County has worked with the loving hands of volunteers and donors to improve the lives of families and individuals through affordable homeownership. Habitat MCTX volunteers build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. Volunteers and donors build the hope.
