UPDATE: Sink hole closes part of Warrenton's Main Street - Fauquier Times
UPDATE: By Thursday morning, July 29, Main Street had been repaired and reopened. Town Manager Brandie Schaeffer said that the issue was due to a leak from many years ago. She added, a "leak was repaired from the inside so no one was aware of the void created by the leak. Over time -- 10 to 15 years -- the void gave way to form the sink hole."
ORIGINAL STORY: A sink hole that opened up Wednesday night on Main Street has caused the Town of Warrenton to close the street between Culpeper and Third streets until the extent of the problem is discovered.
Police Chief Michael Kochis was on the scene and opined that it's possible that an old leak wore away at the dirt under the street and caused the hole.
Town Manager Brandie Schaeffer said at 2:45 p.m. that crews are still working to find the root of the problem. She emphasized it's important to find the source of the weakening; she's getting hourly updates.

Meet the Round Table of Bay Street's 'Camelot' Outdoor Show - Dan's Papers
Rounding out this exciting, experimental summer season at Bay Street Theater is musical classic Camelot, which shall be retold as a staged outdoor concert in Bridgehampton beginning Thursday, August 5. With a story as timely as ever, told in a magical setting that allows for more intimate connections between characters, actors and audience members, this is shaping up to be one of the Sag Harbor theater’s most fascinating productions to date.
Bay Street Artistic Director Scott Schwartz is directing the production, translating the book and lyrics of Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Lowe to this new outdoor format and taking notes from the small cast David Lee adaptation. By “taking the show and stripping away the pageantry” Schwartz intends to zero in on the complex relationships and interactions between the show’s love triangle—Arthur, Guenevere and Lancelot—and demonstrate how deep and rich these characters truly are. However, fans of the show know that there’s much more at play than just romance, and the themes of justice, peace and righteousness are especially relevant today.
“I’ve been thinking about what we’ve been through in terms of the pandemic, and I was certainly thinking about all of the strife that our country and the world has been going through politically,” Schwartz explains. “I thought that to do a show about people who are in a time of struggle but working to make things more equal, more just and more fair felt like exactly the right kind of work to be exploring right now.”
While unable to receive Sag Harbor Village approval for the use of Steinbeck Park, the alternative—located at 2011 Montauk Highway, Bridgehampton, across the street from the Bridgehampton Commons in the field behind Carvel—turned out to be more than Schwartz could have hoped for. “It’s so magical! It feels like you’re in this Celtic circle of trees,” he says, adding that with nature being so important to the beliefs of the Camelot era, the space furthers the connection between the show and its source material. “Camelot felt like a show that would not only work outside, it would actually benefit from being outside.”
The main cast chosen to breathe passion into the story’s love triangle comprises Jeremy Kushnier as Arthur (Rent, Jersey Boys, Footloose); Britney Coleman as Guenevere (Company, Sunset Boulevard, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical); and Deven Kolluri as Lancelot (Pride and Prejudice, Drunk Enough to Say I Love You?, The Boy Who Danced On Air). Their supporting players include Amaya Grier, Kyle Lopez Barisich, Aaron Dalla Villa, Hope Hamilton, James Harkness, David LaMarr, Cecelia Ticktin and Kevin Wang.
With the play’s emphasis on interpersonal connections between its three main characters in mind, we gathered the actors around the Round Table to discuss their personal connections to these characters and their thoughts on this outdoor retelling.
Britney Coleman, Guenevere
“She brings a lot of the bubbly joy to a lot of the sections of the show. Having gone through what we’ve gone through in the last almost two years, thinking about the effort it takes to dive into self-care, to bring joy into your life, I think it’s much more of a conscious decision now than before the pandemic.
“There are references to magic in the show, it talks about seeing Merlin in the moon in one of our scenes, and it’s just that glorious moment in theater when you can look up and the moon is in front of you. … I think the design of our show is really cool, mixing this modern edge with the softness of nature and Celtic undertones, and I think that’s going to be something that’s really interesting, an image that people recognize and can connect with when they come see the show. … We don’t really have a backstage, so it’s all open and I feel like we’re going to be in this space just as much as the audience. And I’m thinking from an audience perspective, being wrapped up in this story where there isn’t as much of a boundary from onstage versus offstage will be a really cool, almost communal experience.”
Deven Kolluri, Lancelot
“One part of the life of being an actor that I really appreciate is being in process—this idea that the work is ongoing—and that’s something that’s very true for Lancelot, as well. Even though he’s achieved some sense of perfection in a lot of people’s eyes, for himself, he’s constantly going through this process of becoming better and becoming this ideal. … My interest in being in process as a theater artist finds that in a really fun and interesting way, and I can allow myself to be in process while figuring out this character.
“The character is a foreigner who finds that in a lot of ways his world gets broken when he gets introduced to this woman and shows up in this new place, and there’s something about being outside … and finding this sense of what feels like home onstage and then everything being broken and having to put it back together again and make sense of something. That process of theater … I’m excited to do it again, in a new space and with a bunch of new faces, and for the character’s journey, to put these things back together so he can understand himself in a new and different way.”
Jeremy Kushnier , Arthur
“In the early stages of discovering, for me, Arthur and how he exists in the world, the one thing that jumped out to me was how earnest he was as a character in general. For me personally, I tend to play very opposite types of characters; I tend to be shoved into Mordred and Iago just because of the way I look. I love playing those characters, but I never really connected the same way. … I’m enjoying the connection with this character that I feel more connected to in his hopefulness for wishing for something better, a place where people can just be good to one another and that the powerful use that power to take care of the less powerful.
“For most of us in the show, it’s our first time back on a stage with lights in our faces and other people that close and not in a Zoom box. One of the big themes in this show is storytelling; it’s what we do for a living, and it’s what we do because we love it, and it’s something that has sort of been taken away from us in a lot of ways for the past little while … so getting to do that again but also getting to tell this story, which is a story about finding a way to exist in a world where the rich people pay their g*ddamn taxes and the people that are supposed to take care of us take care of us. To be able to try and tell that story now is, I think, really important.”
Tickets to Camelot, which runs August 5–29, start at $45 and are available through the box office by calling 631-725-9500 or by visiting baystreet.org. The outdoor Bridgehampton space allows for 200 guests to be seated at a safe distance from one another, plus plenty of room for parking.

MyPillow to Pull Ads From Fox News in Disagreement With Network - The Wall Street Journal
The chief executive of MyPillow Inc., one of Fox News’s big advertisers, said he is pulling his ads from the network after a disagreement over a proposed commercial.
Mike Lindell said he made the decision after Fox News declined to run a commercial linked to his efforts to promote his claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential election. Security and election officials have said there is no proof of widespread election fraud.
“It’s unfortunate Mr. Lindell has chosen to pause his commercial time on FOX News given the level of success he’s experienced in building his brand through advertising on the number one cable news network,” Fox News said in a statement.
Fox didn’t say whether it blocked the ad.
Mr. Lindell said he wanted to cancel the ads as soon as possible and that he had told his ad buyer to inform Fox News.
Mr. Lindell said he had asked the network to air a commercial promoting a cyber symposium, which he is scheduled to live stream next month. Mr. Lindell said the commercial wouldn’t specifically mention claims of election fraud. But he has said the symposium will prove the 2020 election was stolen from then-President Donald Trump through manipulation of election machines.
Fox News parent Fox Corp. and Wall Street Journal parent company News Corp share common ownership.
MyPillow is among Fox News’s major advertisers, alongside supplement company Balance of Nature and weight-loss products provider Nutrisystem, according to advertising analytics firm iSpot.tv.
MyPillow spent almost $50 million on Fox News last year and so far this year has shelled out about $19 million for ad time on the network, Mr. Lindell said.
Since the 2020 election, Mr. Lindell has emerged as one of the most prominent proponents of unproven theories that the election was stolen from Mr. Trump through widespread fraud. Voting-machine maker Dominion Voting Systems sued Mr. Lindell and MyPillow in February for defamation, seeking more than $1.3 billion in damages. He has countersued.
Fox News has been sued by voting-machine companies Smartmatic USA Corp. and Dominion Voting Systems, which allege the network’s hosts and guests made defamatory on-air comments about the companies’ products. Fox News has moved to dismiss both lawsuits, saying its coverage of claims about election fraud was newsworthy and protected by the First Amendment.
Mr. Lindell said he is being silenced over his election claims. He previously has said that a number of retailers have stopped selling his pillow company’s products since he began promoting the election-fraud claims. Some retailers have said that they dropped the products because of poor sales, not politics.

Is There Really a Case for Reopening Sixth Street's Weekends to Cars? - TOWERS Austin
Members of Austin City Council voted unanimously last night to pass a resolution “relating to comprehensive strategies and immediate and longer-term actions to create a safer Sixth Street environment for all,” which directs city staff to study potential design interventions and other changes that could improve public safety in the East Sixth Street bar district that’s seen a number of recent violent incidents despite being perhaps the city’s single most heavily-policed area.
The most drastic possible design change raised by the resolution and its major sponsor, Council Member Kathie Tovo, is the proposal of reopening the street to car traffic on weekends — the area generally recognized as the East Sixth Street entertainment district has been closed to cars at night between Red River and Brazos Streets from Thursday through Sunday since the 1990s.
This isn’t the only intervention on the table, but it would certainly be the most instant visible change, and the appearance of the concept this week saw an immediate horrified reaction from more urbanism-minded Austinites concerned that the reintroduction of traffic to the district would simply inflict vehicular violence on the street’s weekend pedestrian crowds atop the existing rash of gun violence.
Let me take an educated guess. No.
Would Opening Sixth Street To Cars On The Weekend Make It Safer? One Council Member Wants To Know. https://t.co/yDeN9kYYC8
— David Wenger (@wengernation) July 29, 2021
It’s certainly a proposal standing in an almost comically precise opposition to our generally urban-oriented perspective regarding the value of pedestrianized streets, and we’ve had plenty of philosophical disagreements with Council Member Tovo’s approach to downtown’s growth in the past, but we’re forced to reluctantly admit there might be some merit to the notion of cars on Sixth Street in a limited sense, though in any case the street’s problems stretch far deeper than infrastructure.
It was repeatedly emphasized by Tovo and others during yesterday’s council meeting that simply reopening the street to cars without other changes doesn’t appear to be on the table. The resolution is more broad in its recommendation for researching solutions to recent public safety challenges on Sixth with input from stakeholder groups including Austin’s police and fire departments along with EMS and local business owners, but the underlying tone of the whole process appears to be finding ways to prevent Sixth Street’s large weekend crowds from attaining the sort of critical mass thought to be a precursor to outbreaks of violence, sparked by the presence of large groups loitering on the pedestrianized street after the bars close.
Even this basic assumption should likely receive further study, since the dynamics of some recent shootings here appear to be more complicated in their origins, but the idea of design interventions that break up large open spaces on the street, whether that street’s open to cars or not, could take us in the right direction — Council Member Tovo mentioned the potential of installing temporary seating in the center of the street during its pedestrianized hours, along with the much easier fix of increased lighting infrastructure throughout the district.
We’d certainly prefer this approach if it meant we could increase the street’s safety while keeping it fully open to pedestrians, but if the research process sparked by this resolution does eventually decide to open Sixth Street to traffic, there’s a right way to do it. First, this stretch of the street would need to be converted from one-way to two-way traffic — we’ve done this on many surrounding one-way streets, and it’s provided clear benefits in terms of reduced speeds and more efficient navigation.
Sixth Street is four lanes wide in this area, but a reopened version would need to be reduced to only two central lanes, one in each direction. We’d line these lanes with crash-resistant concrete “Jersey barriers,” thus reclaiming the lanes on either side for additional pedestrian space and protected bike lanes — we’ve heard actually widening the sidewalks on either side of the street might be a bit challenging because of the area’s historic status, but this would of course be a better permanent solution.
Keep in mind that unlike other parts of downtown, there are no parking lots or parking garage entrances along this area of Sixth Street, so the argument that reopening a portion of the street to traffic would increase drunk driving doesn’t seem as convincing as it otherwise might — at the moment, visitors either park at facilities blocks away or utilize ridesharing services, conditions that wouldn’t change with a hypothetical reopening to traffic. If designed properly with designated ridesharing drop-off zones, a partial reopening of the street could arguably decrease drunk driving, due to the convenience of rides starting and ending directly inside the district and not requiring the additional walk to outside parking.
Whether or not the addition of traffic as a physical barrier to crowd size would actually measurably decrease violent incidents here, the problem with Sixth Street isn’t really crowds or cars — it’s the types of businesses that entirely dominate the district, namely identical bars run by a handful of owners with a financial interest in keeping the street’s environment precisely how it is, since otherwise their poor stewardship of one of downtown’s most dense collections of deeply historic buildings might eventually attract enough negative attention to finally galvanize change.
We’ve long maintained that the more mixed assortment of businesses you’d once find on the street to its great benefit until things went south in the mid-1990s would go a long way towards keeping an eclectic crowd in the area, a broader clientele less inclined to the single-minded pursuits of reckless drinking and subsequent violence — we’re very glad to see other local voices recently taking a similar tone on the subject.
Beyond the issue of cars, we were thrilled to hear CM Tovo mention the possibility of looking into methods of attracting a more diverse business environment to this part of the street, though the particulars of those incentives are unknown for the moment. Per Council’s discussion, we’ll likely hear more about possible fixes later on this year — just remember that Sixth Street has changed its tune quite a few times since 1839, and there’s absolutely no reason we can’t change it again.

Proposal To Rename San Francisco Street To Honor Crime Victim - KALW
A member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Tuesday, introduced a resolution to rename a city street after an elderly Asian man who died after being violently shoved to the ground in January.
San Francisco Supervisor Catherine Stefani is proposing to rename Sonora Lane as Vicha Ratanapakdee Way. The 84-year-old Thai immigrant was attacked by two men in the Anza Vista neighborhood and died two days later. His alleged assailants were arrested.
This was one of many recent attacks against members of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. Stefani said "our friends and neighbors should not have to fear the unthinkable when they walk our streets."
The resolution was supported by the San Francisco-based Southeast Asian Development Center and Ratanapakdee's family.
His daughter said the street name change "will remind future generations that violence against our AAPI elders has no place in our society."

Renaming Committee submits street name recommendations for renaming of Jordan Avenue - Indiana Daily Student
The joint task force between the City of Bloomington and IU, convened by Mayor John Hamilton to recommend new names for Jordan Avenue, has completed its report.
The unanimous recommendations for the road’s two sections are “Eagleson Avenue” for the city owned section of Jordan from Davis Street to 17th Street and “Fuller Lane” or “Mattie Fuller Lane” for the university owned section from 17th Street to Fee Lane, according to the release.
The first name recommendation honors the Eagleson family, the release said, a Bloomington family of four generations whose members have made significant contributions to the city, university, state and county, starting with Halson Vashon Eagleson who was born into slavery and came to Bloomington in the 1880s.
The second recommendation honors Mattie Jacobs Fuller who, after being born into slavery in Kentucky, became a lifelong resident of Bloomington at age four. She was a successful business woman and suffragist who made the donation that founded Bethel AME Church, according to the release.
The Renaming Task Force reviewed more than 500 names submitted to the city’s website by members of the public.
The task force based its selection on the criteria that the streets be named in honor of people who were longtime Monroe County residents, made significant contributions to the community and had not already received significant city and university honors and awards.
City and university officials requested the two streets have separate names because they are not contiguous. The task force also recommended that historical markers be installed providing biographical information about the street’s namesakes.
Formal renaming of the streets is the responsibility of the Bloomington Plan Commission, which will hear the proposed names and take public comment at a public hearing, and of the IU Naming Committee and IU Board of Trustees.
A notice of the proposed names will be sent at least 30 days before the hearing to all affected property owners and residents. The Plan Commission will adopt a resolution establishing new names which will go into effect no sooner than 90 days after the vote, according to the release.
The IU Board of Trustees voted to rename Jordan Hall, the Jordan River, the Jordan parking garage and a section of North Jordan Avenue in October 2020. They are now named Biology Building, Campus River and East Parking Garage, respectively.
Seventh president of IU, David Starr Jordan, was at the forefront of the American eugenics movement and advocated for forced sterilization legislation. American eugenics has been acknowledged as an influence on the racial theories that led to the Holocaust, according to the release.

Integer beats The Street in Q2, boosts sales outlook - Medical Design & Outsourcing
Integer Holdings (NYSE:ITGR) posted second-quarter results today that beat the consensus forecast on Wall Street — boosting its 2021 sales outlook amid continued recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Plano, Texas–based medical device contract manufacturing giant reported profits of $29.4 million, or 89¢ per share, on sales of $312.0 million for the three months ended July 2, 2021. The results mark a major improvement over Q2 2020, when Integer earned $389,000 on sales of 240.1 million.
Adjusted to exclude one-time items, earnings per share were $1.07, 16¢ ahead of The Street, where analysts were looking for EPS of 91¢ on sales of $294.17 million.
“Integer delivered strong growth versus last year on continued recovery from the pandemic,” Integer CEO Joseph Dziedzic said in a news release. “These results demonstrate the resiliency of Integer’s associates to deliver for customers and patients despite the U.S. labor constraints and global supply chain disruptions. The strength of our second-quarter results supports another increase in our 2021 financial guidance as we continue to execute our strategy to generate a premium valuation for shareholders.”
Integer now expects $1.20–1.22 billion in sales this year, a 12–14% increase over last year. The company projects EPS of $2.45–2.82, a 5– 21% increase.
Investors reacted by sending ITGR shares up slightly to $99.46 apiece by midday trading today. MassDevice‘s MedTech 100 Index, which includes stocks of the world’s largest medical device companies, was also up slightly.

Wall Street employees begin to mask up again as Citigroup tells workers of new mandate - CNBC
For a few glorious weeks, Wall Street employees who were vaccinated against Covid-19 could ditch their masks at the office.
That appears to be ending after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended this week that even fully vaccinated people should wear masks indoors in areas with significant transmission rates.
Citigroup told employees late Wednesday in a memo that they will now be required to wear masks in U.S. corporate offices, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Other Wall Street firms including Morgan Stanley are closely monitoring the situation, said another person with knowledge.
The rise of the more contagious delta variant of Covid-19 has forced companies to reassess their plans to return employees to physical offices. Some, including Facebook, Alphabet and The Washington Post, are requiring employees to be vaccinated. Others such as Lyft have pushed back the date it expects employees back, saying it now anticipates them returning in February.
Citigroup, the third-biggest U.S. bank by assets, is following CDC guidance, according to the person who declined to be identified speaking about the company's plans.
Back in May, the CDC said that fully vaccinated adults didn't need to wear masks or socially distance indoors, and Citigroup had been following that protocol for corporate offices, although masks have been required at branch locations, the person said.
Employees sitting at their desks or eating in a cafeteria don't need to wear masks, the person added. Citigroup declined to comment on the record about its employee policy, which was reported earlier by Bloomberg.
Financial firms have generally been more aggressive than other industries in touting a return to office life, based on concern that the collaborative culture of Wall Street banks was beginning to degrade during the remote work era.
JPMorgan Chase, the biggest U.S. bank by assets, had no changes as of Thursday from its latest guidance, which allowed the vaccinated to relinquish masks and daily health attestations as of this month, according to a person familiar with its planning.
Bank of America is maintaining its guidance that employees should use masks in areas where social distancing isn't possible like elevators, said a person with knowledge of the bank. The firm still plans to bring back most of its employees after Labor Day, the person said.

Robinhood makes its debut on Wall Street - ABC News
NEW YORK -- Robinhood's stock will begin trading Thursday on Wall Street, the very place the online brokerage has rattled with its stated goal of democratizing finance.
Through its app, Robinhood has introduced millions to investing and reshaped the brokerage industry, all while racking up a long list of controversies in less than eight years.
Robinhood Markets and three of its executives are selling up to 60.5 million shares of its stock in the initial public offering, with trading expected to begin on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “HOOD.”
It was priced late Wednesday at $38 a share, the low end of its expected range of $38 to $42, perhaps a sign of tepid investor interest. That price puts the company's total value at close to $32 billion, which puts it on par with companies like Stanley Black & Decker and V.F. Corp., whose apparel brands include Timberland boots and Supreme streetwear. Robinhood itself raised nearly $1.9 billion in the deal, which it plans to use to expand and to help pay for expected tax obligations.
Still, it’s a huge moment for the fast-growing company based in Menlo Park, California, which is reserving many of the shares for its own customers, rather than just big professional investors. Can Robinhood convince them to embrace its stock, just as it helped a generation of investors take on trading stocks, options and cryptocurrencies?
Here are a few things to keep in mind ahead of what’s one of the most anticipated IPOs on Wall Street this year:
———
HOW DOES A FREE SERVICE MAKE MONEY?
Robinhood’s revenue soared 245% last year to $959 million. It then hit $522 million in the first three months of 2021 alone, more than quadrupling from the year-ago level.
Robinhood doesn’t charge trading commissions or require customers to carry big balances — one reason why it's so popular. It makes the bulk of its money — 81% of revenue in the first quarter— by funneling investors’ orders to big trading firms, such as Citadel Securities, which take the other side of the trade. They also give a payment to Robinhood.
The practice, called “payment for order flow,” has drawn criticism from lawmakers and regulators. But legal experts say tighter regulation may be difficult to bring about. Brokerages need to make money somehow, and if Robinhood can’t get it from payment for order flow, it could go back to charging trading commissions, said Joshua Mitts, a law professor at Columbia University.
———
WHAT IF THE TRADING BOOM FIZZLES?
Even if payment for order flow sticks around, Robinhood’s dependence on the practice could be an issue. During normal times, Robinhood may get about 75% of its money from transaction-based revenue, roughly triple what some competitors get, said Tom Mason, senior research analyst at S&P Global Market Intelligence.
Robinhood says its revenue could fall in the July-September quarter when compared to the April-June period, when revenue rose an estimated 124% to 135%. Besides seasonality issues, Robinhood said it expects to see decreased levels of trading activity, particularly in cryptocurrencies, which accounted for 17% of revenue in the first three months of the year.
Among other risks, Robinhood's customers could spend less time on the app if a fading pandemic means they can go on with their lives and do other things with money.
Robinhood also hasn’t always kept customers happy: Its platform has had some high-profile outages, and early this year it temporarily barred investors from making trades in GameStop, when manic movements in its stock were the talk of the market.
———
TRUSTING CUSTOMERS AS INVESTORS
Robinhood is taking the unusual step of allowing users of its trading app to buy up to 35% of its IPO shares before they begin trading. That’s the largest portion by far of pre-IPO shares to be designated for retail investors in an underwritten offering, says Matt Kennedy, senior IPO market strategist at Renaissance Capital.
Typically, only institutional investors and company insiders can buy shares in companies before they go public, and ordinary investors miss out on any first day pop. Between 2001 and 2020 the average U.S. IPO returned 14.5% from the offer price on day one, according to Renaissance Capital. The return this year is an even-better 25% when looking at IPOs that raise at least $100 million.
The biggest risk, Kennedy says, is that retail investors are more likely than institutional traders to flip their shares for a quick profit, raising the possibility of increased volatility on the first day of trading. For its part, Robinhood has warned that users who sell IPO shares within 30 days of the IPO will be restricted from buying shares in IPOs on Robinhood’s platform for 60 days.
