LEDGEVIEW, Wis. (WBAY) - Fire heavily damaged the Chicago Street Pub and New Hope United Methodist Church Friday night. Fire crews used a backhoe to knock down walls of the church to reach the fire after hours of attacking it with multiple ladder trucks.
Ledgeview Fire Chief Tom Guns says the fire involved an air-handling unit in a large attic space and also an electrical room in the church. Firefighters were using three ladder trucks in an attempt to reach the flames.
Guns added that firefighters don’t know if that’s where the fire started, “but that’s where it is.”
Chicago Street Pub was open when the fire was reported and multiple people were inside, Guns said. Two people who were in the grill and banquet facility told Action 2 News they were settling in around 5:30 when smoke started coming in.
“We had just started to eat our popcorn and talking, and the next thing we knew we were told you got to get in your vehicle and leave,” customer Anne Stiles told us.
No people were treated for injuries or smoke inhalation, Chief Guns said as of 8 P.M.
Photos and video from the scene showed smoke pouring from the roof of the building early in the fire fight. Much of the roofing was pulled away from the entrance to the church. Our crew at the scene said the church was taking the worst of the damage during the fire.
Guns estimated once the fire was out, fire departments would be on the scene for another three or four hours for cleanup and salvage.
Action 2 News originally reported the fire was in De Pere. The building at the corner of Dickinson and Swan roads is across the street from the city limits, in the town of Ledgeview.
We saw fire trucks from Green Bay, Ashwaubenon, De Pere, Denmark, Hobart, Lawrence, Ledgeview, Morrison and Wayside. Under a mutual aid agreement, firefighters from Denmark, Greenleaf and New Franken would staff De Pere fire stations in case of other calls.
New Hope UMC was established in 2006, according to its website.
The building was formerly The Swan Club.
