Construction on Second Street Bridge between Arrowhead and Mountain View avenues south of San Bernardino County Superior Court is scheduled to begin next month.
The heavily-traveled thoroughfare over Warm Creek in downtown San Bernardino has been closed to traffic since March 2020.
City leaders last week awarded Irvine-based Ortiz Enterprises a $2.6 million contract to complete the job. Total project costs are estimated to be around $3 million. Funding for the project was included in the city’s fiscal 2020-21 Capital Improvement Plan.
San Bernardino can seek reimbursement from Caltrans at a later date, according to a staff report.
A 2005 Caltrans inspection found 2nd Street Bridge was deteriorating. Furthermore, officials learned, the condition of its structure reduced its ability to resist earthquake loads.
Last year, advanced structural deficiencies were uncovered by Caltrans inspectors, spurring the bridge’s closure.
Work on the replacement bridge is expected to conclude in October.
