Brainerd street, parks employees earn 2021-22 hourly wage increases - Brainerd Dispatch

Contracts with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 49 for street and parks employees for 2021-22 both come with a 2.5% cost of living wage increases in 2021 and 2022. The 2021 increase is retroactive to Jan. 1.

“We have discussed this in closed session, and this is where we reached,” Human Resources Director Kris Schubert said Monday.

The cost of living increase benefits both legacy and wage grid employees. Those hired after Jan. 1, 2019 fall on the city’s eight-step wage grid, which is merit based. New employees are hired on at steps 1-4 depending on experience, and veteran employees are able to move up to higher steps based on performance.

Both union groups already approved the terms of the contracts, and council members approved them unanimously Monday.

In other business Monday, the council:

Accepted fourth quarter donations to the fire department: $8,308 from Brainerd Fire Relief Association for an insulation vacuum; $5,000 from Brainerd Fire Relief Association for an insulation vacuum trailer; $3,000 from Compeer Financial for personal protective equipment hoods; and $500 from Mid Minnesota Mutual Insurance for equipment. The following groups gave donations for public fire safety education: ATEK, $300; Thelen Heating & Roofing, $300; People’s Security Co., $200; Anderson Brothers Construction Co., $200; Brainerd Games, $100; and Auto Import, $75.

Authorized the fire department to donate old self-contained breathing apparatuses to the Ironton Fire Department. Brainerd firefighters recently upgraded their equipment, and the old equipment — while out of date — is still better than what Ironton is currently using, Fire Chief Tim Holmes said, adding there was no trade-in value for the equipment at the time of upgrade.

Promoted Administrative Specialist Stephanie Bestul to administrative specialist 2, effective Feb. 2, at step 5 of the city’s wage grid, earning $26.86 per hour. The council also authorized staff to conduct the hiring process to fill Bestul’s previous position.

Approved a variance request for a property on the 400 block of Cedar Street for applicants who requested a reduced front yard setback from 20 feet to 18 feet and 4 inches for the addition of a covered porch. The planning commission unanimously recommended approval of the request in January, noting the curvature of the lot’s front property line creates a practical difficulty due to circumstances unique to the property not created by the landowner.
