REED CITY – The Chestnut Street (US-10 business Loop/Old US-131) bridge over the Hersey River in Reed City is closed to traffic, and will remain closed for roughly two months.
Reed City city manager Ron Howell told the Pioneer beginning Monday, contractors will begin emergency repairs to the bridge that will increase the weight limit on the bridge to accommodate heavier emergency vehicles and trucks, with permanent beam and deck repair projected to be done as late as 2024.
During the closure, barricades will be in place on the bridge, and all traffic through the city will use an alternate route via Church street.
“MDOT views Church Street and Chestnut Street as US-10 bypass routes,” Howell said. “If you come off of US-10 from the north and go through the city, you come back out on US-10 via Church Street. All truck traffic is being directed to the Church Street entrance into the city and out.”
If trucks try to go through the residential areas, he warned, law enforcement will be watching, and drivers could be fined as much as $5,000.
The city was informed by MDOT in October that the bridge was in need of repair and an inspection of the bridge showed significant deterioration in sections of the bridge and holes in the beam ends, which made the bridge unsafe for traffic over a certain weight limit.
It was temporarily closed, at that time, while load limit signs were put in place limiting traffic to a 3-ton weight on the bridge.
Truck traffic has been detoured to the Church Street route since that time.
Howell said he hopes the repairs can be completed in time for the grand opening of the new Ebels General Store, which is projected to take place in February 2021.
