OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – Spring Lake is showing off its “sparkle” with 120,000 Christmas lights lining its Main Street in what will likely become a new holiday tradition.
“Spring Lake Sparkle” debuts at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, on Savidge Street when the lights will be lit – and will stay lit each night through Jan. 3, 2021.
It’s a bright and cheery gesture organized by the operators of the Lilley Mansion bed and breakfast and their Lilley Cares nonprofit, said Robert Lopez, executive director of Lilley Cares.
The historic Lilley Mansion was moved through Spring Lake to a new location in August 2019 and opened as a bed and breakfast this year.
“When we moved the house we had such positive feedback from the community,” Lopez said.
A committee of local leaders and businesspeople was formed and “very generous” donations were received from local businesses to help the effort, Lopez said. Donations continue to be collected and will be used to purchase coats to be distributed by Love Inc. and food to be given out by The People Center, he said.
Information on how to donate is at the Spring Lake Sparkle website.

Organizers originally had planned a series of activities, such as food vendors, visits with Santa and musical performances, to occur each weekend leading up to Christmas. However, the spreading COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of those activities, Lopez said.
But Spring Lake Sparkle is committed to sticking around for at least five years, so the hope is future years will offer opportunities for the festive activities, Lopez said.
Lights and decorations adorn trees and businesses – including the interiors of some businesses. For example, the interior of Stan’s Bar, a Spring Lake legend, has been decorated with 20,000 lights, Lopez said. If the current COVID-19 order closing such establishments is extended past the current Dec. 8 deadline, the plan is to leave Stan’s lights up into January, he said.
“We hope this will have a lasting impact for businesses and locals,” Lopez said. “You don’t have to go to Grand Haven to see the light show.”
For a brief period on Thanksgiving, the lights were turned on to make sure they all work.
“People were gobsmacked,” Lopez said.
