WEST LOOP — The Adams Street bridge over the Kennedy Expressway will be closed starting Monday as part of ongoing work on the Jane Byrne Interchange project.
The Adams Street bridge, the last of the 11 local bridges to be replaced as part of the interchange overhaul, will reopen in 2022. The new bridge will have two westbound lanes and wider sidewalks, according to an Illinois Department of Transportation news release.
As part of the bridge removal, Adams between Halsted and Desplaines streets will close at 5 a.m. Monday, officials said.
Motorists will be detoured south on Desplaines, west on Van Buren Street and north on Halsted, according to IDOT.
Pedestrians are being asked to use the Monroe Street bridge. Bicyclists are being detoured south on Halsted, east on Harrison street and north on Clinton street to reconnect with Adams, according to IDOT.
The Adams Street entrance ramp to the outbound Kennedy will also close. Drivers will be redirected north on Jefferson Street then west to enter the expressway on Madison.
The inbound Kennedy exit ramp to Adams will close as well, with drivers directed to exit at Monroe Street and access Adams via Halsted, according to IDOT.
The interchange overhaul started in 2013 and is expected to be completed in 2022.
