DULUTH, MN-- Northland Constructors will begin removing pipes containing asbestos Monday as part of the Phase 3 Superior Street Reconstruction project.
The pipes are a part of the districts steam heating system and have been around for over 100 years.
The removal of the pipes will be done by licensed asbestos abatement contractors.
Signs will be up near work sites and areas will be blocked off.
Access to all buildings along the work zone will be maintained while work is performed.
The public is asked to please stay within designated areas.
Also starting Monday, portions of lower Michigan Street will be closed to all traffic between 16th Avenue West and 19th Avenue West.
Parts of the street will be closed as workers will re-locate a 1,300 foot segment of gas line to accommodate the Twin Ports Interchange project.
The project will limit access, allowing only local traffic between 16th Avenue West and the Superior Street.
Intersection near the M &H. Motorists will be directed to use the detour route established on Superior Street and 20th Avenue West during the pipeline construction.
Pedestrians using the Cross City trail paralleling Lower Michigan Street can still enjoy use of the trail during most of the project, with some short term trail re-routes to Michigan Street expected later in May.
The area of Lower Michigan Street is projected to re-open in the middle of June after pavement restoration occurs.
