Eau Claire (WQOW) - The COVID-19 pandemic is putting a halt to several businesses around the city, but construction season in Eau Claire is right on track.
On Monday, the first of more than 30 street and alley projects around the city begins on Lake Street, between Dewey and Farwell.
City engineer Dave Solberg said construction is actually starting sooner than usual due to the warmer weather.
The project involves adding bike lanes, and replacing some utilities that are over 120 years old, such as parts of the sewer, water mains and gas lines. It's something Solberg said needs to be done, no matter what's going on in the world, to keep the city running smoothly.
"Whether we're having a natural disaster with possible wind storms or flooding, or now we have a health emergency, as long as we follow the guidelines and we're able to keep people safe and do it in a responsible manner, it's important to keep providing that essential infrastructure for the city," said Solberg.
The project was originally scheduled to be done with the rest of Lake Street last year, but the city ran into issues with relocating some of those utilities.
The project is expected to be completed in June.
