Groton — The City of Groton announced that Thames Street will be partially closed, starting Monday, to repair a retaining wall damaged during a storm last summer.
"Beginning Monday, Thames Street will be closed between Ledyard Avenue and the intersection of Eastern Point Road at Smith Street and as such traffic will be detoured onto Ledyard Avenue and Smith Street," the city notice states. "The road will be closed in both directions at these points. We anticipate the road closure and detour will last approximately 2-3 weeks."
Groton City Mayor Keith Hedrick said the wall was damaged during heavy rains and flash flooding on July 22. He said partial road closures will start Monday, and he anticipates construction will begin in the near future.
The preliminary cost of the project is about $316,481, Hedrick said. The city plans to use $193,512 in unspent highway money in last year's budget and will request $69,969 from the town.
The wall on Thames Street is right on the property line with Electric Boat, Hedrick said, and the company will contribute the remaining $53,000. "Electric Boat is being a good partner with the city and has agreed to participate," he said.
He said the city awarded the design and engineering contract and the construction administration and inspection contract to Cheshire-based Milone & MacBroom. American Industries of Jewett City "was chosen as the lowest responsible bidder" for the reconstruction project.
"It’ll be good to finally get this started and finished, so no additional damage could occur to the roadway or on Electric Boat property," Hedrick said.
The city said in the notice that people with questions or concerns can call Public Works at (860) 446-4164. The city also said it has notified the school district transportation coordinator, who can be reached at (860) 572-2100 if people have questions regarding changes to bus stops, pickups or times.
